The Speed Hike Rescue - Kalihani Pass
And then started the exercise of Rescue with collective efforts of who ever recived the message ...
Where many Twist came from Air rescue being aborted last minute ..
This Rescue was so well timed that if it was delayed by few more hours it would had been 100% sure that rescue would have Got difficult .
Salute and hats off to Super heros of ATOAM ( jogi and team ) and ABVIMAS team lead by ( Dina nath and team ) ..
Here are wordings from PETER VAN
Sneha and myself reached back safely to Manali yesterday evening. We sincerely thank all of you who were instrumental in helping us getting back to safety.
We had planned to cross the Kaliheni pass and reach to Bara Bhanghal. I had crossed Kaliheni pass trice before in previous years but we got surprised this time by fresh winter snow which in bright sunny weather lead to snow blindness of Sneha. We were able to cross the pass and reach a safe shepherd rock shelter at 4000m where we stayed for 4 night8s / 3 days hoping her eyes would improve so we could continue our journey. When she was still unable to see clearly in daylight and food ration was running low we decided I should climb back to the pass and call for outside help.
I was lucky to get mobile network there itself. I informed my friend Pranav Rawat who shared the message widely reaching out to the right channels.
Immense thanks to Jogi and his team of volunteers from ATOAM who responded with lightening speed to our call for help. These men are nothing less then angels disguised in human form. His team reached Rali Thach at 3500m the same day itself at 11pm from where they left 5am the next morning to cross the pass and reach us by 2pm
. We never expected anyone on the ground to reach us so fast. After providing food and immediate first aid they decided to take us back before the weather turned bad. At 4pm we started back from the shelter and with super human strength the team carried Sneha 800m up across 6km of morraines and the Kaliheni glacier throughout the evening without any sleep. We reached the pass by 9pm from where we descended down through steep frozen snow to reach the Sanghor sheter at 4000m by midnight when the weather turned bad up there. After preparing dinner, Jogi and his team 18 hours on their feet spend the freezing night sitting in an open rock shelter without proper camping gears.
The next morning they took us down to Rali Tach where the team of ABVIMAS had set up a basecamp with support and medical facilities to take care of us. The paramedic diagnosed Sneha's eyes and she could open her eyes for the first time after 5 days. He told us that her eyes would recover 100%. What a relief!!! The entire team of first responders continued the way down to Kasheri, strong men carrying Sneha on their back steep down by 4pm.
Dr Sonali was waiting for us in an ambulance to provide proper medical care after which we were taking to an eye hospital in Manali for further care. The doctor prescribed the required medication and advised two days of further rest in a dark room.
A million thanks to each and everyone of you who reached out to help us directly or indirectly.
Sneha & Peter
This whole rescue was successful because it was done very timely and was lead by very strong teams ...
In this case Peter was lucky that he got Signal and his message was spread like wildfire .
Now question arises what would have happened if he did not got signal ..
When Air rescue was promised by Administration previous night what would have happened if Ground teams turned back that air rescue is coming .
Do Himachal Pradesh as a Adventure capital of country is so incapable that there is no support system or back up to adventure fertility.
That we cant do air rescue where thousands of people go to treks .
Why cant we have strong systems like other countries.
Answer is government needs to recognize bodies like ATOAM Where we have experts like Vishal and Jogi and all others who exhale in this field and who have decades of experince in saving people life at high altitude .
Government needs to Harness there skills and take there feedbacks in making and understanding ...
Another big problem now a days is group of youngsters who buy pair of quechua shoes , a rucksack , walking stick and fleece upper and 2 men tent with no experince of mountains ..
And this is perfect recipe for incidents ..which keeps on happening ...
Yet we all should come together and make better support system where everyone can feel safe and at a same time responsible for adventure ...
A trip to the mountains is all we need to make our spirits soar! The exhilaration, thrill, and sense of accomplishment you get when you climb, hike, or ski mountains is unmatched. Everything feels insignificant and trivial as you reach the top of the mountain and glance at the world below. It’s impossible to express that feeling in words.....
